The TD Field Guide
The Machinery of Adoption, Named
Adoption is usually told as a family story. This guide treats it as a system, with inputs, outputs, paperwork, revenue and a way of protecting itself. Seventeen frameworks, each one a tool you can carry into a hearing, a reunion, a policy submission, a family argument or your own head at three in the morning.
Look inside
Who it's for
If you were adopted
It gives names to what you may have felt your whole life but never had words for: the sealed file, the gap in the story, the pressure to be grateful. None of it was in your head. It has a structure, and this guide maps it.
If you adopted, or are thinking about it
Your child came through agencies, paperwork, fees and sealed records that most parents are never shown. This guide isn't here to blame you. It's here so you can see what your child may one day need you to see.
First families
The mothers and families on the other side of the record, and the machinery that separated you, named step by step.
Professionals
Caseworkers, lawyers, clinicians, policy makers and researchers who need precise language for harms the official vocabulary was built to soften.
What's inside
Every framework traces back to one mechanism, the Loop: six steps (Foreclosure, Silence, Symptom, Misattribution, Control, Transmission) where the last restarts the first, one generation down. The rest of the guide is close-ups of single points on it.
- How identity is taken. Identity Foreclosure, The Architecture of Silence, Maintenance Economy, The Architecture of Absence.
- What it does to the person. The Fifth-Dimensional Split, The Identity Gravity Well, The Identity Attractor, The Adoptee Paradox, Adoptee Metacognition, Photon Sheet Theory.
- Why no one sees it. Non-Adoptee Bias.
- Evidence and reconstruction. Provenance-First Identity, The Sovereignty Architecture, Post-Tragic Consciousness.
- Working frameworks. Weaponised Inverted Maternal Grief, Heresy vs. Orthodoxy, Borrowed Consciousness.
Each entry gives you the definition you can quote, how it works step by step, signs you can check against your own case, where Thoughtless Delineation documented it in the record, and which step of the Loop it shows. Evidence is graded throughout: proven, inferred or suspected.
Sample: Field Note No. 01
Identity Foreclosure
“The file was closed before the child could speak.”
In one line
An identity is issued before the child can contest it. Every later attempt to revise it is punished, pathologised or blocked.
How it works
Foreclosure has three working parts. Premature closure fixes the identity at the start: a new name, new parents, a new birth certificate. Foreclosure enforcement meets every later challenge with punishment, a diagnosis or a locked door. Institutional ratification puts the law and the record behind the closure, so the adoptee ends up arguing with a statute, not a person.
The first two parts are enough for the coercive control reading to hold. The third is what makes it permanent.
What to look for
- An amended birth certificate presented as the original.
- A search for origin treated as ingratitude or instability.
- Records released at an official's discretion, on the institution's terms.
From the corpus
Australian state redress schemes for forced adoption compensate mothers and exclude the adoptees taken from them: $30,000 in Victoria, $75,000 in Tasmania. The closure is ratified a second time, inside the apology.
Questions
What is the Loop in adoption?
The Loop, or the Analog Fractal Feedback Recursion of Adoption, is the meta-framework of Thoughtless Delineation. It has six steps: Foreclosure, Silence, Symptom, Misattribution, Control and Transmission. Each step feeds the next, and the last restarts the first, one generation down, in a drifted form.
What is Identity Foreclosure?
An identity is issued before the child can contest it. Every later attempt to revise it is punished, pathologised or blocked.
What is the Architecture of Silence?
The systemic machinery that suppresses the search for biological truth.
What is the Maintenance Economy in adoption?
The money that keeps concealment running.
What is the Adoptee Paradox?
Being told you were chosen while living with displacement. Gratitude is demanded for the very event that caused the loss.
What is the Fifth-Dimensional Split?
Living across two signals that never sync: the biological origin underneath, the constructed identity on top.
What is Non-Adoptee Bias?
The default privileging of non-adoptee perspectives in policy, institutions, media and technology.
What is Provenance-First Identity?
An identity claim must trace back to its primary source. It is not accepted on the record-holder's authority.
What does Thoughtless Delineation propose instead of adoption?
Replacement: care arrangements that protect a child without falsifying who they are. Guardianship without a new birth certificate; kinship care inside the child's own family network first; open records by default; and redress for both mothers and the adoptees taken from them.
